Technology-based products are an important export market for Turkey. Over the years, Turkey has produced and exported more than $200 billion worth of technology goods. These ranged from high-tech goods like computers to low-tech products like calculators. As the first quarter of 2022 came to a close, the numbers were announced and they show that Turkey is on the upswing again.
The “National Technology Movement”, which is carried out under the direction of the Ministry of Industry and Technology and aims to ensure Turkey’s economic and technological independence, is yielding results. Thanks to the work carried out with the vision of the “National Technology-Oriented Industry”, Turkey’s exports of manufacturing industry products have increased rapidly in recent times in line with the technology intensity.
According to the Ministry of Commerce and the Turkish Institute of Statistics, exports of high, medium-high, medium-low, and low technology intensity products amounted to $212 billion 827 million last year. Compared to 2020, an increase of 33.1 percent drew attention. Of that, nearly $6.5 billion was for high-technology products and $71 billion was for medium-high technology products. Last year, nearly $206 billion worth of technology-intensive products of various classes were imported.
Turkey Sets a Record in Technology Exports as Well
The increase in exports of technology-intensive products in 2021 continued in the first quarter of this year.
In the January-March period, exports of manufacturing products by technology intensity increased by 20.7 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching $56 billion 844 million. In the same period last year, this figure was $47.1 billion.
Exports of high-tech products amounted to $1.6 billion in the relevant three months. Exports of medium-high technology products amounted to $18.7 billion. Also, exports of medium-low technology products amounted to $17.8 billion. Finally, exports of low-technology products amounted to $18.7 billion. Also, the increases of 6.6 percent for high-tech products and 10.5 percent for medium-high-tech products are noteworthy.
Among the high-technology products that were exported most from Turkey are pharmaceuticals, computers, electronic and optical products, aerospace and related machinery, and high-tech products. Medium-high technology products that were exported the most were communication equipment. Among them were telephones, televisions, alarm systems, sound machines, and the like. Medium-low technology level products that were exported the most were petroleum gases and materials, pipes, software replication services, etc. And low-technology level products were basically machines that are not expensive to produce and relatively simple to operate.
A Decline in High-Tech Exports
In the January-March period, imports of manufacturing products increased by 20.3 percent. It reached $58 billion 130 million by technology intensity. In the same period of 2021, imports of these products were reported as $48.3 billion.
The decrease in imports of “high-tech products” in the said 3 months attracted attention. Turkey imported $6.4 billion worth of high-tech products in the first three months of last year. However, it achieved imports of $5.8 billion in the same period of this year, a decrease of 9.8 percent. Imports amounted to $26.3 billion in medium high-tech products, $18.9 billion in medium-low tech products, and $7.1 billion in low-tech products.
Germany Ranks First in Turkey’s Exports
Last year, Germany took first place among the countries importing from Turkey. In this period, exports to Germany from Turkey amounted to $7 billion 683 million. Germany was followed by the USA with $5 billion 427 million and the United Kingdom with $4 billion 983 million. Italy followed with $4 billion 397 million and Iraq with $3 billion 981 million. Exports to the first 5 countries in 5 months corresponded to 31.1 percent of total exports.
During this period, China took first place among the countries Turkey imports from. While imports from China to Turkey amounted to $12 billion 286 million, Russia followed with $10 billion 312 million, Germany with $9 billion 354 million, the U.S. with $4 billion 700 million, and Italy with $4 billion 575 million. Imports from the first 5 countries to Turkey represented 39.8 percent of total imports.
